NOTE:  Any changes to an employees role responsibilities should be conducted in consultation and agreement between the employee and direct Supervisor.  While task flexibility should be a natural part of an employees agreed task responsibilities, it may be illegal to make unreasonable changes to an employees job tasks without prior consultation and agreement.  You should also refer to the appropriate Award when it applies and consider any increased risk factors associated with any changes made. 

 

Job Enlargement

 

Refers to additional role tasks and responsibilities to the employees current ones which are at a higher level to the current tasks.  Job Enlargement may motivate an employee by giving them the opportunity to take responsibilites in areas they may have developed new skills as well as the opportunity to be promoted to higher duties.  This may or may not be linked to a performance review. 

 

Job Enrichment

 

Refers to additional/different role tasks and responsibilities to the employees current ones which are at the same level to the current tasks. Job Enrichment may motivate an employee by giving them the opportunity to take on additional responsibilites in areas they may have developed new skills as well as the opportunity to learn new skills. This may or may not be linked to a performance review.

 

Job Rotation

 

Refers to moving employees into different role tasks and responsibilities to their current ones which are at the same level to the current tasks. Job Rotation may motivate an employee by giving them the opportunity to have a temporary break from their usual responsibilites in areas where they may the opportunity to utilise any developed skills.  Job Rotation may also keep an employee motivated if there are monotonous, routine tasks that have the potential to become boring.  Job Rotation may also be associated with Job Sharing.  This may or may not be linked to a performance review.
